Medical Professionals - Hospice Care - End-Of-Life Care

Early referrals mean more time for the patient to benefit from services they have earned the right to have.

Special Note/Important Information:

Many physicians worry about the six-month life expectancy that is listed as criteria for hospice admission. Unfortunately, this concern is often hindering the care of the patient because physicians are referring patients to hospice too late. Of all the patients that Hospice Care served during the year 2000, 48% lived less than 30 days after admission.

The life expectancy criterion is only a guideline and we find that it is hindering the referral process. We urge all physicians and family members to truly contemplate before saying it is too early for a hospice referral.
